Bouza Monte Vide Eu 2007
Composition: 50% Tannat, 20% Merlot, 30% Tempranillo.
Price: 980 Uruguayan pesos, or about $50. Unavailable on Wine-searcher, though the 2006 is available for $45-$75 (2 vendors).
Great, dark, rich, ruby color, with great legs.
The aroma is very soft and floral. It smells a bit acidic too.
The wine is actually quite pleasant. One would expect it to be overly harsh/rough because of the tannat and the tempranillo, but there is some nice balance here. It has a great acidity which is smoothed out well over time, as the palate picks up the tannin taste. The wine has lots of body (it’s so heavy it almost feels like a meal substitute), and it does have some complexity to it. While it starts out with an acidic youth to it, it becomes increasingly oaky and spicy in the mouth. Still, it is a bit too bitter and almost overpowering, as though the tannins are a bit out of control. It definitely needs to be drunk over time with some food, ideally a steak.
Overall Score: 3.5-4.0/5.0 (It really depends on the palate. People who like very strong wines should give it a try). Still, in terms of value, this wine is more of an 3.5 (and a 2.5 if you’re paying $75). There are much better wines at this price right across the border in Argentina.
