Alfredo Roca Chardonnay Cosecha Tardía 2006.
Chardonnay Late Harvest (White Dessert Wine).
Unavailable on Wine-searcher..

Golden color is quite nice. Great tints—a variety of yellows come through, like the color of mulberries and sunlight.

Great aroma—sweet raisins, mixed with a strong alcohol and spice smell. Very humid and fresh.

Taste is interesting. Very sweet, but with a nice hint of saltiness to it that makes it ideal with cheese. It has a nice bittersweet quality to it, and the saltiness just leaves you thirsting for more. Finishes with just a tad of spice.

Overall Score: 3.6/5.0. If matched with cheese, this wine is more of a 4.0/5.0. The enjoyment of this wine really depends on the food that it’s matched with. Cheese really brings out its potential.

Beautiful color, with golden tints. Nice, greenish tints.

What an aroma! Sweet plums and cherries, very deceptively fruity. It has the typical Chardonnay freshness and fruitiness to it.

The taste is very soft and smooth. It has just a tad of spiciness. It’s so easy to drink that it’s like water, but with a bit of citrus and tang to it. Very light as well. The fruitiness complements the lightness of the wine very well. There are also some hints of fresh plums, cherries, and lemons, giving the wine a lot of complexity, which is something I haven’t seen too much in Argentine whites.

Overall Score: 4.0/5.0. In comparison to other Argentine Chardonnays, this should be considered more of a 4.2, though its value isn’t too great by Argentine standards.

Chardonnay
Average of $10 on Wine-searcher for the 2007 and the 2008.

This wine was part of a tasting in a bar, so I couldn’t find the year, though I’m positive it is either the 2007 or 2008.

Numerous shadoes of yellow. Almost golden even. Quite nice.

In the nose, you can find hints of pineapple, vanilla, and honey.

Taste is of honey and fruits, but the wine has a nice balance between bitterness and sweetness. Nice versatility to it. It has little acidity and goes down very smoothly. Just a little bitter and weak for my taste. Nothing extraordinary about it.

Overall Score: 2.7+/5.0

Chardonnay
$15 for the 2007 on Wine-searcher. $19 for the 2008.

Note: This is a low-range “classic” wine made solely with one varietal, made for everyday drinking. I tasted it during a degustation at the actual Tapiz restaurant, so I was not able to see any bottles and mark down specifics, like year. It is probably the 2008 wines.

Same light, boring color as the Tapiz Sauvignon Blanc. Just pure white.

Young, fruity aroma, but with a bit of earthiness. There are some overtones of plums or especially peaches in there. It’s quite nice and rather strong for a Chardonnay.

Taste is very fruity, but it quickly turns unpleasant and bitter. Feels very young, with very little body and length. Very bitter, immature, with little complexity.

Overall Score: 2.0/5.0

Keeper for Value

What a lovely color! Just pops out at you! Foggy, with a slight greenish gold to it. Beauitful gold reflections.

Strong, fruity aroma. Peaches, apples, especially sour cherries, with a nice freshness.

Taste is fantastic for a Chardonnay: light, soft, with just a hint of fruityness, a very elegant finish, and a nice bittersweet citrusy tanginess at the end. Best Chardonnay I’ve had so far in Argentina. Feels very round and developed for a white wine.

Overall Score: 4.0/5.0. Probably more of a 4.2 for value, but I’m no expert on chardonnays, and the quality in general in Argentina probably isn’t as good as what you can find in other parts of the globe.

Chardonnay
$7-$10 for the 2007 and the 2008.

I got this wine at a cheap restaurant in Peru (again, they don’t show the year for wines, nor do they bring out the wine bottles to your table), so I was unable to check the year, but I suspect it was the 2007 or 2008.

The chardonnay has a dark, foggy, golden color—pretty nice. Nice, fresh, fruit aroma.

Very smooth and light, with lots of bitterness. Not much aftertaste either. Also, it’s extremely one-dimensional. Just a mouthful of bitterness.

Overall Score: 1.0/5.0
