Sauvignon Blanc
Bodega Ruca Malen
Unavailable on Wine-searcher

“Yauquén” is Ruca Malen’s youngest Line. No ageing in oak.

The wine has a light, crystal color, with very light yellow, greenish tints.

The aroma is of sour cherries or dried plums. It’s fresh and citrusy as well.

The taste is very light, a tad bitter, and very citrusy. Still, it has no length, and it is far too light to have much of a flavor. Even the citrus taste, arguably the best part of this wine, is very weak. Lacks complexity, body, and flavor, though refreshing, with a bit of nice acidity.

Overall Score: 2.5/5.0

El Portillo Sauvignon Blanc 2008
100% Sauvignon Blanc
Uco Valley
Bodega Salentein
I can’t find the exact year of this wine on Wine-searcher, but it goes for $9-$11.

The color is rather nice and clear, with golden tints.

It has a nice, light summer smell to it—a smell of peaches, tropical fruit, and apples. It’s citrusy, with a lemony freshness in the nose.

The taste is rather decent, especially for a sauvignon blanc. It has a bubbly lightness and is refreshingly acidic. It’s too dry for my taste, though it does have a nice, light berry and tropical fruit taste to it. It tends to become a bit too bitter in the finish.

Overall Score: 3.0/5.0, mostly for value. However, as a disclosure, I’m not a lover of sauvignon blanc wines. If you’re a fan, you might still want to give it a try—it’s better than what you’ll find at many Argentine wineries.

Sauvignon Blanc
$18-$19 on Wine-searcher.

Oddly enough, a little bit bubbly when being poured out. Color is clear but with greenish tints—nothing special though.

It has a soft, floral aroma, with the smell of some ripe fruit, particularly cherries or peaches.

It has a sour cherry, berry, or sour melon taste. It’s both very light and a bit bitter. The freshness of the fruit is prominent.

Overall Score: 3.5/5.0. For value, this is more of a 4.0/5.0. Note also that I’m not a big fan of whites, so there’s a good chance I’m being a bit harsh. The white wines of Pulenta, especially this one, have an excellent reputation. There is no doubt that this is a great Sauvignon Blanc, with a great price.

Color is obviously clear, but with nice, greenish tints. Nothing outstanding, though.

Fresh, fruity aroma, like peaches or apples. Quite strong for a Sauvignon Blanc, which is very nice.

The wine is smooth and fruity, causing a slight puckering of the mouth. It is bitter, but in a refreshingly good way. It’s very short, but that should be expected of a Sauvignon blanc and of something that’s so young. Still, this is very good for a white wine.

Overall Score: 3.7+/5.0. For value, a 4.0. Very drinkable, and great as an appetizer drink.

Sauvignon Blanc
$10 on Wine-searcher for the 2008. 1 Vendor.

Note: This is a low-range “classic” wine made solely with one varietal, made for everyday drinking. I tasted it during a degustation at the actual Tapiz restaurant, so I was not able to see any bottles and mark down specifics, like year. It is probably the 2008 wines.

Color is nothing special. Just pure white. Very fruity, dry aroma. Taste is light, smooth, and fizzy. Really just dull. I’m not a Sauvignon Blanc fan in all honesty, but you can find much better in Argentina.

Overall Score: 2.0/5.0
